Research is the process of searching, it allows you to either make discoveries about a topic or to simply educate yourself. In the past, I haven’t done any formal research, so my experience with it has been limited to researching for essays/papers in my classes.
I read Geoffrey A. Fowler’s, a Washington Post technology journalist, May 12, 2022 article titled, “I gave Instagram photos of my baby. Instagram returned fear” because I could relate to the issue of social media algorithms overtaking one’s feed with unwanted photos/videos. This article discusses the danger unrestricted algorithms pose, and it uses an example of how Instagram’s algorithm analyzed an account posting innocent baby photos to warp the user’s feed with disturbing content of babies with “severe and uncommon health conditions” (Fowler, 2022). Fowler discusses how social media is “amplifying extreme content”(Fowler, 2022) to entice users to stay on for as long as possible which can lead to various consequences such as misinformation, scams, etc; instead, Fowler argues that users need control over their feeds and “need transparency about how algorithms work” (Fowler, 2022). From this article, I learned about how research can analyze seemingly small instances to shed light on deep-rooted problems in our society, bringing us one step closer to solving them. |
